National Grid is hiring a Director, US Tax Research and Planning for our Tax department in Waltham, MA.
Job Purpose

This role will oversee US tax research, advice, and planning for National Grid's US regulated business, National Grid Venture's US activity, and any other transactions and business activity conducted in the US. This position interacts internally at senior levels both within the US and UK (in particular Group Tax) as well as externally with outside tax experts. This role will facilitate all deliverables associated with evaluating and communicating about tax technical matters including drafting memos, briefs, presentations, legal analysis, and summaries of tax law. This position also serves as the lead for tax controversy matters that are expected to go beyond routine filed work.
Key Accountabilities
* Serving as the tax technical leader and adviser for National Grid in the US (including its US regulated business, NGV, and all other US business interests) and overseeing all aspects of tax research, planning and advice (for federal, state and local income and indirect taxes).
* Writing legal memos and briefs relating to all types of taxes (e.g., income, sales, gross receipts, payroll, property, etc.) applicable to National Grid US.
* Drafting and/or reviewing documentation relating to uncertain tax positions.
* Drafting correspondence/position papers to taxing authorities as well as drafting, reviewing, and editing responses to information requests coming from tax authorities.
* Serving as the internal tax technical advisor to the entire tax team by providing tax technical advice to the VP US Tax and federal, state income and indirect tax compliance, reporting, regulatory and audit teams.
* Monitoring and proactively communicating about legislative tax developments applicable to National Grid US's operations.
* Assembling presentations as necessary for interaction at senior levels.
* Interacting with Corporate/Government Affairs regarding legislative developments.
* Ensuring alignment and appropriate treatment of tax structures and transactions in tax financial reporting and compliance by maintaining strong communication with the other Directors within the tax team.
* Maintaining relationships with leaders in Legal, Regulation, NGV, Finance and Business Services, and other internal functions as necessary regarding tax technical matters.
* Liaising with external tax experts and advisors.
* Assisting the Director US Tax Head of Operations in dealings with independent auditors on tax technical matters.
* Joining VP US Tax, and/or serving as a delegate, in interaction with senior leaders within the organization.
* Leading tax training sessions and assisting with the development of the tax team.
* Participating in industry conferences.

Qualifications

Experience Required (technical, knowledge, skill experience):
* Thorough knowledge of corporate tax law (regulated utility industry tax law is a plus).
* Strong written and oral communication skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills and focus on team building.
* Knowledge of federal and state tax compliance and disclosure requirements.
* Exhibit high personal standards of commitment and integrity.
* Ability to bring consistency and excellence in tax service delivery.
* Ability to work independently.
* Demonstration of sound judgment.
* Leads complex technical discussion and analysis, coaches and guides personnel.

Qualifications Required:
* 7 years of experience with a law firm or CPA firm supporting large corporate clients, or with a large public corporate tax department
* J.D with LLM or MST, CPA preferred
