Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute, in collaboration with the Community Services Boards, will always be the
regions center of excellence in the treatment of serious mental illness. Our mission is to promote mental health in
Southwestern Virginia by assisting people in their recovery. Every department at SWVMHI helps the organization work
toward this goal and contributes to the facilitys overall success.

Coordinate services (Recreation Therapy, Recovery Education, Vocational Rehabilitation and Living Skills) for adult patients on an Admissions Unit or Extended Long Term Rehab Unit. Provide comprehensive Rehabilitation services for adult psychiatric patients ages 18-64 in the Long Term Unit or Admissions Unit. This is to include assessment, treatment planning, program development and implementation, and serving as the Resource Coordinator on an Admissions Unit or Long Term Rehab Unit treatment team.

Minimum Qualifications

KSAs and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:

  • Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

  • Knowledge of the theories and principles of Recreation Therapy services and Psychiatric Rehabilitation.

  • Ability to develop and implement a comprehensive Recreation Therapy program and incorporate Role Recovery technology as adapted through BCPR training and emerging Recovery practice.

  • Knowledge and ability to effectively conduct and interpret patient assessments.

  • Knowledge and ability to develop and write measurable and obtainable goals, objectives and interventions.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.

  • Ability to effectively manage physically and/or verbally aggressive patients utilizing TOVA techniques.

  • Ability to work with all members of a multidisciplinary treatment team.

  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to tolerate intense patient interaction.

  • Ability to comprehend, retain and process information (direction, policies procedures.)

  • Ability to adapt to frequent change.

  • Ability to plan and implement individual and group activities.

  • Ability to do light lifting, standing, sitting, walking, and pushing wheel chairs.

  • Knowledge and ability necessary to perform basic computer skills (word processing, outlook, internet).
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Strongly prefer graduation from a regionally accredited college or university in rehab or a rehab affiliated degree such as vocational rehab, music therapy, psychology or a combination of relevant experience.
  • Strongly prefer certification as a CPRP (Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner), ADC, CTRS but not required.
  • Strongly prefer experience working with psychiatric patients.
