Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute, in collaboration with the Community Services Boards, will always be the regions center of excellence in the treatment of serious mental illness. Our mission is to promote mental health in Southwestern Virginia by assisting people in their recovery. Every department at SWVMHI helps the organization work toward this goal and contributes to the facilitys overall success.

Acute Treatment Services seeks to provide the optimal type and level of acute and intermediate behavioral healthcare for those individuals, aged 18 to 64, who meet the criteria for admission to, and continued care at SWVMHI. The Treatment Program seeks to provide these services in a caring, professional, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented environment. Using a customer-service model, the program strives to function in partnership with constituent CSBs and private healthcare entities, as well as law enforcement and the family members, friends, and other supportive individuals in the lives of those we serve.

The qualified candidate will be required to strive to enhance the programming and active treatment on the Acute Treatment unit through concentrating 75% of available time on the provision of active treatment, along with providing consultation to treatment teams and nursing personnel, and carrying out other duties as specified by the Unit Programs Director. The successful candidate will focus majority of clinical service provision to individuals who are newly admitted and/or not sufficiently stable to be involved with programming off the ward by psychology, clinical social work or centralized therapeutic services. All such efforts will be supervised and coordinated by the Unit Programs Director and the Clinical Director.

Minimum Qualifications


  • A combination of education, training and/or experience with the ability to perform the duties of the position, and experience in planning and implementing psychiatric rehabilitation interventions is required.
  • Considerable knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses, group and individual behavioral health treatment techniques, ability to provide services that are best practices, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented in a busy acute admissions environment.
  • Ability to utilize basic computer skills to document active treatment in EHR, to track service hours, and other relevant statistical data.
  • Ability to assist the Unit Programs Director in focusing programming on the needs of the individuals in the program at any particular point in time.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing with all stakeholders and customer groups, market services effectively to individuals receiving services, treatment teams and other relevant parties, and structure work in order to maximize productive use of direct service time and resources.
  • Must have the ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Strongly prefer: Bachelors Degree or college coursework in human services or behavioral health Psychology, Social Work, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Sociology, Counseling, or Human Services Counseling.
  • Strongly prefer: Previous experience providing 1:1/group therapeutic interactions with individuals with intense behavioral health, substance abuse, ID/DD and/or forensic issues.
